The town has a very English feel with its grand Georgian terraces and elegant promenade. The castle, which continues to be the town's major attraction, is thought by many to be the most beautiful in Wales. Edward I, following a Welsh uprising against the crown, commissioned it. The suppressive history of the town is underlined by the presence of the Beaumaris Courthouse and Gaol, which are overlooked by the castle and are also well worth a visit.
With it's18-foot moat, which originally linked the castle to the sea, and its concentric wall layout, the castle it is widely regarded as the most technically advanced in Britain, despite the fact that it was never fully completed due to the drying up of Edward I's funds in 1298. The castle is open all year. For times and more information call 01248 810361.
